Manchester Academy celebrate their 25th birthday by curating an online archive

Manchester Academy 1 have launched a digital display of previously unseen music memorabilia from the likes of Jimi Hendrix, David Bowie and Led Zeppelin.

The online exhibition began on October 7th this year and displays tickets and artefacts from gigs held at the Manchester University venues. It was created to celebrate the venue’s 25th birthday and aims to tell the Academy’s history from 1963 all the way through to the present day.

Abigail Ward, curator of Manchester Academy Memories, said: “It’s not just about the big names that have passed through, it’s about the social and political histories that are inextricably entwined with the music”.

The digital exhibition is part of Manchester District Music Archive (MDMA) – a crowd-sourced digital archive established in 2003 to celebrate Greater Manchester’s music and its social history…
